An awesome little girl name Kamryn Renfro should be an inspiration to us all this week.
Kamryn, 9, of Colorado shaved her head to show her support of a friend with a rare form of childhood cancer, and was kicked out of school for it.
Fox News reports that Kamryn wanted to make her 11-year-old friend Delaney Clements, who has lost her own hair due to cancer treatment, feel less alone, so she shaved her head to match.
But when Kamryn showed up at school at Caprock Academy on Monday she was sent home for “violating the dress code,” which specifically states “no shaved heads.”
After a media firestorm and an outpouring of support she was allowed back on Tuesday.
There may be more of a general problem with this whole neighborhood – if I’m reading this story correctly – as Fox News story also suggests that the other kids at school are making fun of Delaney for having cancer. The little girl told Fox affiliate KDVR she was happy to have the support so people wouldn’t be “laughing” at her.
“I was really excited I would have somebody to support me and I wouldn’t be alone with people always laughing at me,” she said. “I would at least have somebody to go through it all.”
Wow. Maybe it’s just a little girl feeling insecure about her appearance and imagining people are mocking her. But if not, some real grown ups need to step in here and set both the children and the other grown ups in this town straight. I don’t think I would want to live in this area.
School officials said they would hold a special board of directors meeting to review the incident.
