A school bus ride took a horrifying turn in the Alfred-Almond school district in Allegany County, New York. This surveillance video captured a group of terribly frightened students, freaking out and asking their bus driver to stop the bus. You can hear one of the kids clearly scream “Put on the brake!” The reason? The bus driver, 55-year-old Martha Thompson, was drunk. She was driving the bus with a .15 blood alcohol content, which is nearly twice the legal limit, but at the time, she thought the kids were overreacting. Three teenage girls in the bus noticed something was not right after Thompson missed a turn. They asked the driver to stop, but she ignored their request, hit sped up and ran over a mailbox. Finally, the students decided to save their lives by opening the emergency door in the back of the bus to get out, while you can hear Martha screaming to the kids, to get back in the bus. Martha Thompson was sentenced to 90 days in jail and six months of home monitoring for driving a bus while intoxicated. Parents were outraged when the decision was made.
Do you think Martha Thompson deserved a harsher punishment for her actions?
