In fact, it can be surprisingly easy to become a sweepstakes winner if you know how. With our help you can gain a sweepstakes advantage!
So, with that in mind we’ve put together our guide on How To Win Sweepstakes like a pro.
You've Got To Be In It, To Win It
Perhaps, the golden rule of winning prizes is this – if you’re not entering sweepstakes, you can’t win them.
It sounds obvious but when we talk to some people it becomes clear that it’s not.
Winning sweepstakes is something of a numbers game.
If you only enter one sweepstakes a year you’re very unlikely to ever win a prize.
Because the average number of entries in a sweepstakes is about 1,000 (though this can vary a lot – we’ve seen some with as few as 20 or 30 and others with 10,000+).
So, if you only enter one sweepstakes – you’ve got a 1 in 1,000 chance of winning.
But if you were to enter 10 sweepstakes with similar odds then you’d have a 1 in 100 chance of winning. So, the more sweepstakes you enter the more likely you are to win.
However, we’d point out that it’s not worth your time entering sweepstakes where you don’t really want the prizes. That’s making work for the sake of work. Focus your efforts on winning things that you really want.
Location, Location, Location
One of the biggest clues as to the number of likely entries to a sweepstakes is the area of eligibility for entry. This is the scope of potential prizewinners.
So, a sweepstakes that only allows entries from your hometown? That’s likely to pull in very few entries. If, however, they only allow entries from your state? It will get more.
The biggest number of entries that a sweepstakes is likely to see is if the sweepstakes only allows entries from North America: the U.S.A. and Canada.
Interestingly, we’ve noted that “International” competitions (e.g. those with very wide eligibility for entry) get much fewer entries than North America only sweepstakes. This may be because people in North America think they have less chance to win. The evidence says otherwise.
So, think about the eligibility of entry when you enter a sweepstakes. The smaller the area – the bigger your chances of winning.
Jumping Through Hoops Is A Great Thing
Want to know what puts people off entering sweepstakes online? Being asked for anything more than an e-mail address. In fact, the more that a sweepstakes asks people to do – the fewer people who enter.
This is good news if you’re serious about winning online sweepstakes and getting those lovely prizes. It means that if you put in a little more effort than most – you’re going to have a much bigger chance of winning.
So, fill in those questionnaires, answer the “simple question”, or whatever else it is that the sweepstakes’ creator is asking you to do and do it with a smile.
You know that your competitors have already given up and gone home. It’s too much effort for them to spend an extra minute or two on the entry method. So, take advantage of that and enjoy the fruits of your labors.
This is also true for offline sweepstakes. In fact, it’s even more true for sweepstakes where you have to mail in the entries.
Because going to the mailbox is even more effort than filling in a form by hand. That walk won’t just make you healthy, it might make you a winner!
The Sweepstakes Prize Matters
These are the sweepstakes which attract the most entries. No surprises there. They’re high value items that can really change people’s lives.
This doesn’t mean that you can’t win these items. It just means that you’re going to have to try harder to win them. If you want big money or a super vacation you’re going to need to enter a lot of sweepstakes to get there.
Smaller items, however, have much less competition. In fact, we’d say that items like an Amazon Kindle or a sandwich toaster will often only have 50-100 entries. That means if you’d like to prove you can win stuff it’s a good idea to target some smaller prizes as well as the big ones.
Once you start winning it will motivate you to enter more sweepstakes and win more stuff.
Refer A Friend And Win Big
We’re not advising that you become an annoying Facebook spammer begging all your friends to enter every last sweepstakes that you come across.
We want you to have friends when you start winning so you can share your joy with them!
However, we are saying keep an eye on referral bonuses for sweepstakes. They are a very powerful tool when you really want to win.
If, for example, you want that Amazon Kindle. You know that roughly 100 people are going to enter. That’s a 1 in 100 chance of winning. But you get 1 bonus entry for every friend you refer and you refer 100 friends.
Well, that’s 100 new entries on top of the 100 it would have got. That’s 200 entries total. But you have 100 entries of your own. Making 300 in all. Now, you have a 1 in 3 chance of winning the prize!
In some, sweepstakes they offer more than one entry for referring a friend. These are the sweepstakes that you can really clean up on if you can get your friends to help you out. Don’t be shy about asking when you really need a hand.

If you want to win sweepstakes – you need to enter a lot of sweepstakes, choose locations that maximize your winning chances, jump through more hoops than your competitors, pick a sensible mix of prizes and refer friends when you can get the biggest benefits from doing so.
